Garnet symbolizes the 2nd wedding anniversary, and during the 1800s, garnet symbolized the 18th wedding anniversary. The idea of giving symbolic gifts based on the number of years a couple had been married started to become really popular during the mid-to-late-1800s. Different countries have different lists, but in the United States the first list of wedding anniversary gifts was compiled by librarians at the Chicago Public Library. Then in 1937 the Jewelers of America created the official list of modern anniversaries.

About

Avatar Hello. My name is Tina, and I live in beautiful Washington State, with my husband Dan and our dog Sgt Pepper. Gemstories is my blog. Here you will find all kinds of stories about gemstones, from history to folklore, theology to decorative arts. Old mineralogical magic books, dusty libraries, and weird rock shops, I love all that stuff. I hope you enjoy reading!
